Abstract

Earthworms population dynamics were studied in mixed forest soils of Kumaun Himalaya. Three species of earthworms Amynthas morrisi, Amynthas gracilis, Amynthas corticis belonging to the family Megascolecidae were found. Densities ranged from 0 to 21.6ind.m-2 and the biomass from 0 to 9.8 gm-2. Earthworm density shows positive correlations with soil moisture, soil C and N. Depth distribution of earthworms indicated that mean of 67.1% of total earthworms and 64.5% of total biomass were collected at 0-10 cm soil layer. Age structure of earthworms indicated that aclitellates were more abundant than clitellates (1:1.06). Earthworms were not found during winters.
