Ants belonging to order Hymenoptera under family formicidae of class Insect, are one of the dominant organisms living in the soil. The distribution and abundance of ant species in and around South 24 Parganas was studied. We are mainly concerned about degradation of our eco system and its effect on large fauna. But ants have been ignored. Present study is carried out at three locations in and around South 24 parganas totally there found 22species belonging to 14 genera under 4 subfamilies at all three sites. Pit fall trap, hand collection and baiting methods were used to observe ants. Ant species diversity mostly found in Gangaduara i.e. village region. Ant species belonging to the subfamily Myrmicinae were well represented across all sites.
