Abstract

A total of 52 species of 13 genera under five subfamilies belonging to the family Conopidae of the order Diptera are reported from India, which is 6.25% of the total world extant conopid fauna.  Among these, 13.46% species are reported from India without specific locality record. 40.38% species are found as restricted/endemic in India. Among the 36 states and Union territories of India, conopids are distributed in 17 states and UTs. Highest numbers of species are found in the Himalayan biogeographic zone (46.15%) and lowest in Arid, Semi-arid and Hot desert (5.77%). So far, nothing has been known from Islands biogeographic zone.
